Knowing Japanese is not the same as speaking it. For N4 to N2 learners: five 50-minute 1-on-1 sessions in one month, a daily video diary, and my feedback on weekdays.
The application is short and I read every one myself. If it looks like a good fit, I'll email you to book the free call. You pay nothing before we both decide to start.
“I learned how to express myself and keep a conversation going without freezing.” Martin, Speaking Coaching student
Ryusei (Tyson) explains the program · 3 min · Japanese, with English subtitles
You've studied grammar and passed tests. But when it's time to speak, you freeze, or you sound too textbook.
You're not "bad at Japanese." You're just stuck in study mode.
Real words from students who finished the month.
★★★★★
"It was incredible. I made more growth in my output in one month than in over a year of self study. Now I string thoughts together in Japanese instead of translating in my head, and I don't freeze up nearly as much. The sessions were a real chance to practice in real time, and everything felt super personalized. Anyone who wants to improve their Japanese should absolutely sign up."
★★★★★
"It felt very focused from the start, and everything we worked on built naturally from one session to the next, so I could actually notice my progress over time. Ryusei pushed and encouraged me just enough, challenging but never overwhelming, and he adjusted the content to fit my level so I never got stuck. I learned how to speak casual Japanese, sound natural, and most of all how to express myself and keep a conversation going without freezing."
★★★★★
"I enjoyed it and looked forward to every lesson. I feel like I can hold a conversation more steadily. Even if I was unsure about what to say, I just decided to continue the conversation. Ryusei listened to my concerns and was able to give me constructive feedback while helping me build my confidence."
Hi, I'm Ryusei Maeda, founder of Nihongo Hongo. Most of my students call me Tyson, so you'll see both names around here.
I became a Japanese tutor 5 years ago. Since then I have helped more than 100 learners move from knowing Japanese to actually speaking it.
I also know how it feels from the other side. I started English at 23, studied in the Philippines for six months, then lived in Perth for two years. I still remember freezing at a counter trying to order a coffee. I knew the words. My mouth just would not move.
This program exists because I've seen what happens when you stop studying about Japanese and start training to produce it. Students are usually surprised by how much changes when they speak every day and get clear feedback.
If you're ready to stop waiting until you're "ready," let's get started.
You and I work as a team to change how you speak Japanese.
We work one month at a time. Each month has one clear speaking goal, set around your level and your real life. If it works for you, you keep going. If not, you stop.
Choose your focus: Polite Japanese, Casual Japanese, or even Kansai Dialect.
We start with a free video call where we:
You'll walk away with clarity, even before the program begins.
After the Discovery Call, I build your 4 week speaking plan:
Across the month you get five 50-minute sessions, so most weeks look like this:
You practice saying what you actually want to say, until it comes out faster.
Between sessions, you're never on your own:
By Week 4, you hear the change yourself.
It asks more of you, and it costs more each month. In return, you stop waiting a week between chances to speak.

This is a premium 1-on-1 program, so I take on 3 new students a month. After you apply, we go through the price, the schedule, and whether this is the right fit on a free Discovery Call. You pay nothing before we both decide to start. No upfront packages, and no pressure to continue beyond the month you're in.

No long contract and no upfront package. You pay one month at a time, and you can stop any time. The current month is non-refundable, as it covers your roadmap, phrase list, and coaching.
Life happens. If you need to pause between months, reach out before your next month begins and we'll pick a restart time together, based on your schedule and my open spots.
Roughly N4 to N2. You should already have the grammar and vocabulary basics, because this month is about using what you know out loud, not learning it for the first time. If you're a complete beginner, this isn't the right program yet and I'll tell you so on the call.
Plan on 30 to 60 minutes a day, plus your five 50-minute sessions across the month. That's the video diary and the practice I pick for you. It's built to fit around a job. What matters more than the length is that it happens every day, because that's what turns knowledge into speech.
I'm in Osaka, so I work on Japan time. Most of my students are in North America and Australia and we find slots that work. Before you commit to anything, we check your timezone against my open hours on the discovery call. If the times genuinely don't work, I'll say so rather than take your money.
You pay one month at a time, and you can stop after any month. If you'd rather commit to two or three months up front, the rate drops. We go through the numbers together on the call, so there's nothing to work out before we've even spoken.
Reach out before your next month starts and we'll pick a restart time together. I'd rather pause properly than have you paying through a month you can't show up for.
Yes. You pick the focus: polite Japanese, casual Japanese, or Kansai dialect. The phrase lists and the scenarios we practice get built around the one you choose and around your actual life.
Then I'll tell you on the call and we won't go ahead. The discovery call is free and there's no pressure in it. I'd rather turn someone down than take on a student I can't get results for.
If you can study Japanese but still freeze when you speak, start with the application. I'll read it myself and check your level, your schedule, and what is stopping you. If it looks right, we talk on a free Discovery Call before anything starts.
