Thank You & Goodbye

ありがとうございました

Means "Thank you (for what you've done)." Past tense. The proper goodbye thank-you. Leaving a restaurant: ありがとうございました! Leaving a hotel: ありがとうございました! The staff will bow. You bow back. Pure Japan.

お世話になりました

Means "Thank you for taking care of me." Use this at: your hotel checkout your tour guide goodbye that ramen shop you went to 5 times. You: 4日間お世話になりました! Owner: またお越しください〜!

また来ます

Means "I'll come again." The most beautiful goodbye to Japan. You: また来ます! Staff: お待ちしてます〜! And you mean it. Because once you visit Japan, you'll be back.
